HELPFUL GLOSSARY OF TERMS

The following is a list of terms which might be helpful as you navigate our website and learn more about the tests we offer.

 

Allergy – the immune system’s reaction to substances in the environment.

Aluminum – a low density chemical element.

Alzheimer’s disease – a type of dementia that causes cognitive and behavioral changes. Symptoms slowly worsen over time.

Amalgam – amalgam is a combination of metals, consisting of liquid mercury and a powdered alloy composed of silver, copper, and tin.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – is a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Autoimmune/inflammatory diseases– affect the tissue and organs in the body. Symptoms include pain, tiredness/fatigue, rashes, nausea, headaches, and dizziness. Examples of autoimmune/inflammatory diseases are lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Biocompatibility – compatibility with living tissue or a living system by not being toxic, injurious, or physiologically reactive and not causing immunological rejection.

Biocompatibility testing – testing the compatibility with living tissue or a living system by not being toxic, injurious, or physiologically reactive and not causing immunological rejection.

Biological dentistry – an approach to oral health with emphasis on finding the cause  throughout the body.

Central nervous system – the body’s processing center made up of the brain and spinal cord.

Ceramic – inorganic compounds, formed of metallic, semi-metallic and non-metallic materials, typically crystalline.

Crohn’s disease – an inflammatory bowel disease.

Chronic fatigue syndrome – extreme fatigue lasting six months or more, may worsen with physical or mental activity.

Common dental materials – items as resin composites, denture base resins, cements, glass ionomers, ceramics, impression materials, noble and base metals, gypsum materials, amalgam alloys, and casting investments.

Composite dental materials – synthetic materials, such as resin, that combine polymeric matrix with a distribution of glass, mineral, or resin filler particles and/or short fibers by combining agents.

Dental toxicity – the amount or degree of a matter needed to be poisonous, in the oral/mouth region.

Environmental toxins – substances and organisms that negatively affect health. Examples are pesticides, industrial waste products, and carcinogens such as asbestos.

Fatigue – extreme tiredness or weakness caused by mental and physical factors.

Fibromyalgia – a condition that causes pain all over the body, accompanied by fatigue and sleep issues.

The Huggins-Grube Protocol – an integrated system that incorporates multiple safety factors to enhance immune recovery.

Immune reactivity/ Immune system response – The way the body defends itself against substances it sees as a threat. Immune response, the immune system identifies antigens, such as bacteria or viruses, and attacks tries to destroy them.

Inflammation – a part of the body becomes reddened, swollen, hot, and/or painful, as a reaction to injury or infection.

Keratinocytes – most common type of skin cell.

Lupus – A chronic, inflammatory, connective tissue disease affects the joints and many major organs.

Mercury poisoning/toxicity – when body is exposed to too much mercury. Mercury poisoning can occur when  eating too much seafood that contains mercury.

Metallic dental materials – nickel-chromium, cobalt-chromium, stainless steels, titanium, and nickel-titanium alloys.

Metal sensitivity – an immune reaction that is caused by specific cells of the body’s immune system as a reaction to certain metals.

Multiple sclerosis – a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system.

Parkinson’s disease – a long-term degenerative disorder that affects the motor system.

Patient advocacy – a support system for patients to help communicate with their healthcare providers so they get all information needed to make decisions about their health care.

Rheumatoid arthritis – an autoimmune and inflammatory disease. The immune system attacks healthy cells in your body.

Toxicology – helps us determine the harmful effects that chemicals, situations and substances.

Toxicologist – a scientist whom develops ways to determine the harmful effects of chemical and physical agents.

Ulcerative colitis – an inflammatory bowel disease. Causes inflammation and ulcers in your digestive tract.
